Being Satisfied
If after eating a person is not satisfied they will eat more. This may sound obvious but being satisfied is not the same as being full. It's often said of Chinese food that ten minutes after a meal you want to eat again. The food is not satisfying. Obese people often exist on junk food and they eat it to excess because it is unsatisfying.
People who diet often choose their meals according to the latest fad rather than by taste or by what would be satisfying. Consequently, the meals fail to satisfy and the dieter finds that either they eat more in an attempt to be satisfied, or they feel constantly unsatisfied and the diet becomes a struggle between their intellect and instinctual desires. It's often said that in order to really lose weight you have to change your eating habits, but this is impossible if you are constantly unsatisfied. I read of a diet that claimed to be very successful where the dieter stuck to a rigid calorie intake for six days a week and ate whatever he wanted on the other day. In addition, once a year he went on a three-week binge. This served the purpose of achieving satisfaction. A better solution is to eat good quality food that you enjoy but in moderation.
The concept of being satisfied extends to other areas of life. One of the reasons that sex outside of marriage is frowned on by many religions is that it is inherently less satisfying than sex within marriage. The unmarried couple are always seeking something to satisfy them sexually, in the same way as the fad-food dieter is always look for a satisfying meal. In certain homosexual communities people take heart stimulants and other drugs in order to increase the sexual rush. A happily married couple has no need for this as the sex is satisfying in itself.
