Currents in Time

As an airplane flies it experiences various atmospheric characteristics. There are periods of smooth flight and periods of turbulence. Sometimes phenomena such as wind shear have caused airplanes to suddenly fall with catastrophic results. Sometimes these atmospheric disturbances are predictable. Pilots know to avoid thunderstorms, and take offs and landing are always cause for concern. Sometimes, however, the turbulence or wind shear can be completely unpredictable.

I've mentioned before how we live in four-dimensional space-time, of which we are really only aware of the three special dimensions (See On Time). As the earth travels through time it passes through currents in time that are analogous to atmospheric currents, and there are periods of smooth travel and periods of turbulence. There are cycles to some of the currents. Most people are aware of cycles in their lives: periods of prosperity and periods of little money; periods of working hard and periods of studying; periods of romance and periods where romance seems to be absent. These cycles are simply reflections of the forth-dimensional currents that the Earth is passing through.

A pilot knows that flying through clouds will give rise to turbulence. The clouds don't actually cause the turbulence – the turbulence is caused by changes in air pressure – but they are indicators of it. In the same way, astrologers know that certain alignments of planets are indicators of these changes in forth-dimensional currents. A full moon indicates high energy; a new moon indicates flat energy. Many farmers are aware that planting should be done while the moon is waxing. The French researchers Michel and Francoise Gauquelin evaluated the birth times of a number of people who were prominent in their chosen profession (for example, Nobel Prize winners, Olympic athletes etc) and found a relationship with the position of Mars in their birth charts.

Sceptics dismiss astrology because it doesn't fit in with their picture of how things work, but this is unscientific. The scientific method is to look (objectively) at the results and attempt to find a pattern. When you have found a pattern you try to explain the cause behind it. To dismiss something because it doesn't appear to conform to your other theories is not scientific. Looking for a cause of why astrological events should affect human behaviour is largely fruitless with the current level of scientific understanding. It requires a different way of looking at the world.

It’s worth noting that the Sceptics mantra “Extreme Claims Require Very Strong Evidence” is in itself unscientific. A good example is The Evidence for Psychic Functioning: Claims vs. Reality where the author states:
If Utts's conclusion is correct, then the fundamental principles that have so successfully guided the progress of science from the days of Galileo and Newton to the present must be drastically revised. Neither relativity theory nor quantum mechanics in their present versions can cope with a world that harbors the psychic phenomena so boldly proclaimed by Utts and her parapsychological colleagues.
In other words, the evidence must be rejected, even if true, because to accept it would mean the overthrow of accepted theories. Of course this is nonsense. Accepted theories don't get overthrown by these ideas, they simply become special cases of a more general theory, in the same way as Newton's theory is a special case of Einstein's theory of relativity.
