Why do bad Things Happen to Good People

The perennial question is: Why do bad things happen to good people, and it's corollary: If God is Good then how is it that bad things happen?

There are a number of forms what is basically the same question. The first point to be made is that this relates to another question which is: Why are we here? If we are here to enjoy ourselves then it would appear that something has gone wrong. Many people appear to lead lives full of hardship; there are many injustices and good people seem to get rewarded for their efforts with pain and suffering. On the other hand, if the purpose of life is not simply to enjoy ourselves then what is this purpose and how does suffering fit in with it? This relates also to what we mean by 'good' and 'bad'. Parents may have wholly good intentions when they punish a child but from the child's limited perspective all he sees is pain.

Christians often say that there is suffering because humans have free will. For example if an airplane mechanic doesn't do his job properly and the result is that a plane crashes, then that is a consequence of free will. The question then arises why do the innocent people have to suffer for the fault of the mechanic?

The purpose of life is to evolve and a large part of evolution is learning by your mistakes. Thus the mechanic has an opportunity to learn, and a harsh lesson it is. There is also a synchronicity in events. We see the earth from a limited perspective but a being who could view the earth from a 5th or 6th dimension would see how these unconnected threads of existence intertwine.

This is theme that requires more explanation and I will return to it later.
